Frequently Asked Questions:
Question: What channels are free-to-air (FTA)?
Answer: There are many free-to-air (clear, unscrambled) channels available from various
satellites, including public education programming, local network TV, ethnic, religious,
and more. Visit http://www.lyngsat.com for a listing of satellites and broadcasts,
including those that are FTA.
Question: Can I get premium channels such as HBO, or DN or DTV channels?
Answer: No. These require a paid subscription. Sonicview receivers are designed for free-to-air
use only.
Question: What type of dish is recommended for a Sonicview receiver?
Answer: Many dishes will work. The best dish for your needs depends on the particular satellite(s)
and channels you want to receive.
Question: What brand of hard drive will work with the HD8000?
Answer: Most external hard drives up to 500 GB will work. Make sure it is formatted to FAT32.
Question: What size external hard drive is best for the HD8000?
Answer: For standard-definition programming, you can record roughly one hour per one GB; so a
250 GB hard drive will record 250 hours. For high-definition, 250 GB will record about
30 hours, and 500 GB will record about 60 hours of programs.
Question: Why won’t my USB flash drive (thumb drive, stick) work?
Answer: If your unit doesn’t recognize the USB stick, try re-formatting the stick on your
computer. Also, inserting the stick WHILE the unit is booting up can sometimes help the
unit to recognize your stick.
